Automatic Driving Lessons in Glasgow
We do not offer automatic driving lessons at Crash Course Glasgow. All of our intensive courses are manual only.
If you have already decided on automatic, we are not the right fit and there is no point pretending otherwise. But if you are still weighing up manual versus automatic, the rest of this page is worth reading before you decide.
Why Most Learners Are Better Off With a Manual Licence
An automatic licence only lets you drive automatic cars. A manual licence lets you drive both. That distinction matters more than most people realise when they are first deciding.
Most cars on UK roads are still manual. Hire cars, pool cars, company vehicles, and a large proportion of used cars under £10,000 are manual. If you pass in an automatic and then need to drive a manual for work, borrow a friend’s car, or buy a used vehicle on a budget, your licence does not cover you.
A manual licence gives you more options. An automatic licence limits you to one type of vehicle for the rest of your driving life.
Is Automatic Easier to Learn In?
Yes, in the short term. Without a clutch and gearbox to manage, there is less to think about in the early stages. That is why automatic lessons appeal to learners who are nervous or struggling with coordination.
But easier in the short term does not always mean better overall. Many learners who switch to automatic because they found manual difficult end up with a licence that restricts what they can drive. The difficulty with manual is usually temporary. The restriction from an automatic licence is permanent.
For learners who are nervous or struggling, a longer intensive driving course often gives them enough time to get comfortable with manual controls without needing to switch transmission type.
When Automatic Actually Makes Sense
There are situations where choosing automatic is the right decision.
If you have a medical condition or physical limitation that makes operating a clutch difficult or impossible, automatic is the practical choice. If you only ever intend to drive automatic vehicles and have no need for a manual licence, it is also a reasonable option. And if you have failed multiple times in a manual and need to get a licence quickly for a specific reason, switching to automatic can sometimes be the pragmatic move.
Outside of those situations, most learners who consider automatic do so because manual feels hard early on — and that is usually a reason to persevere with manual, not switch.
