Driving Test Waiting Times in Glasgow 2026

If you are trying to book a practical driving test in Glasgow right now, the wait is long. Average waiting times across the UK currently sit between 15 and 22 weeks, with Glasgow among the worst affected areas. Most learners booking today are looking at a test date sometime in autumn 2026 at the earliest.

Current Waiting Times at Glasgow Test Centres

Glasgow has three main DVSA practical test centres: Anniesland, Baillieston, and Shieldhall. All three are affected by the current backlog.

Parliamentary data from October 2025 showed the scale of the problem. In Glasgow specifically, there was just 1 test slot available in October 2025 with 1,440 already booked, 7 available in November with 1,567 booked, and just 1 available in December with 1,401 booked. The situation has not improved significantly since then.

The average wait across Scotland was 21 weeks in September 2025. The DVSA’s target of reducing average waiting times to around seven weeks by summer 2026 is now considered unlikely to be met, with revised projections suggesting the backlog could persist well into 2027.

Why Are Waiting Times So Long?

High demand at urban test centres combined with limited examiner availability is the core problem. Automated booking bots and commercial resellers bulk-buying and reselling slots have made it worse.

The DVSA has been increasing examiner numbers — 1,553 full-time equivalent examiners were in post as of February 2026, up 108 from February 2025. But retaining experienced examiners has been difficult, with some retiring or moving to other roles. The system is improving slowly but is still well short of meeting demand in cities like Glasgow.

How to Get an Earlier Test Date

Check for cancellations regularly. Log into your booking account on gov.uk/book-driving-test and look for earlier available dates. Slots appear throughout the day as other learners cancel. Checking morning and evening gives you the best chance of catching one.

Check all three Glasgow test centres. Anniesland, Baillieston, and Shieldhall do not always have identical availability. If you are willing to travel slightly further, centres outside Glasgow sometimes have shorter waits.

Book as early as possible. Even if the date feels far away, booking now puts you in the queue. You can move it earlier if a cancellation comes up.

Be cautious with third-party services. The DVSA introduced new booking rules from 31 March 2026 targeting automated bots and resellers. Some third-party cancellation services may no longer work as reliably as before. Always book through gov.uk/book-driving-test.

What to Do While You Wait

Most learners make one of two mistakes. They either keep paying for weekly lessons throughout the entire wait and spend far more than necessary, or they stop practising completely and arrive underprepared.

The better approach is to reach test standard first, then book. That way you are not paying for lessons you do not need while the queue moves slowly.

For learners who are not yet test-ready, an intensive driving course timed to finish close to your test date is often more efficient than spreading weekly lessons across the entire waiting period. You reach test standard faster, spend less overall, and arrive having driven consistently in the weeks before the test rather than after a long gap.

If you want to compare course options based on your current level, see the Crash Course Glasgow price list. If you are close to test standard already, a fast track option or one week course may be all you need.

Theory Test Expiry

A theory test pass is valid for two years. If the waiting times push your practical test beyond that window, you will need to retake the theory before booking a new practical date. Check your theory certificate expiry date now and factor it into your planning. If you have any questions about how this affects your course booking, the FAQs page covers common questions about theory tests and course deposits.
